Red Dot Reticle Types: How the Pattern Affects Performance

2, 3 or 6 MOA dot, circle, circle-dot, crosshair or multi-reticle? How dot size and reticle pattern affect speed and accuracy.

Red Dot Reticle Types: How the Pattern Affects Performance

The dot size and reticle pattern of a red dot sight directly affect how quickly you aim and how accurately you hit. Let us go through the most common types and when they make sense.

2 MOA dot – precision

A small dot for precise work at medium and longer distances; it covers very little of the target and also works well with a magnifier. The downside is slower re-acquisition during fast transitions and poorer visibility on the move or in low light.

3 MOA dot – all-rounder

A balanced mix of speed and accuracy, the most popular choice for pistol red dots and EDC. It handles a wide range of distances.

6 MOA dot – speed

A large dot for extremely fast aiming and close-range shooting; it is very easy to track under recoil (IPSC/USPSA). The price is lower precision and more target coverage at distance.

Circle and circle-dot

A circle on its own gives very fast "framing" of the target at close range, but without a precise centre. A circle-dot (circle + centre dot) combines fast framing with precise aiming – a versatile choice.

Crosshair

A strong reference for alignment and aiming stability; suitable for controlled, more precise shooting. In fast scenarios it is visually "busier".

Multi-reticle (MRT)

Switchable patterns (dot, circle, crosshair) in a single optic – you do not have to commit to one reticle in advance and can adapt it to the situation. The green (GMR) version also contrasts better against natural backgrounds and looks cleaner to many shooters with astigmatism.

In short: a smaller dot = precision, a larger dot = speed, circle/crosshair = guidance and alignment.

You will find Frenzy multi-reticle red dots in our range – e.g. the Frenzy FA 1x18x22 MRT. See the full range in the Red dot sights category.
