This pistol is known mainly from action movies, TV series and PC games, and it is one of the most famous pistols.
The first design was drawn up in 1979. The first prototype was built in 1981 by Magnum Research Inc. and IMI (Israeli Military Industries). It was manufactured by IMI; in 1995 production was moved to Saco in the USA, and in 2000 production was moved back to Israel. Currently the pistol is manufactured by Magnum Research Inc., USA.
The Desert Eagle is a large and heavy pistol, one of the largest in its category. It is also renowned for its effectiveness. With the most powerful .50AE caliber, its penetration is sufficient even against lighter types of ballistic vests. The action operates on the principle of tapping gas from the barrel, a system usually used in automatic assault rifles. It can come in silver, black, gold and other finishes. It is used by game hunters and sport shooters. It is not suitable for everyday carry because it is quite heavy (it weighs almost 2 kg).
It is made in several caliber variants - .357 Magnum, .41 Magnum, .44 Magnum and .50 AE. Barrels can also have different lengths - from 6 (152mm) up to 14 (356mm) inches, depending on the caliber. Until 1999 a variant with a 35cm barrel was produced. Depending on the caliber, the magazine holds 9 (.357 Magnum), 8 (.44 Magnum) or 7 (.50 Action Express) rounds.
